Ok I have my pc on a network of 6 pcs all connected together through a wired router my internet is provided by bt if i enter my ip address in the internet explorer the router and all pcs connected to it come up with alot of options.
What i am trying to do is access other pcs on my network i tried remote desktop but that wont work.
I tried clicking on each pc under my network places but it says they are not attached to the network or something along those lines.
What i am trying to do is put all the drives on the network so files can be send / browsed from one pc to the next.
The router says something about acessing files on each network pc but when i click it ,it takes ages to connect and then it times out. Each pc is on the network fine all running xp pro sp2 they all connect online.
Not sure what else to do. I have admin acess so i dunno whats wrong.
Network of xp computers?
Try this. Go to Start and go to the Run box.
Once there type in CMD
When that comes up type in IPCONFIG
This will give you your ip. If your on a router the other 5 machines will be in order after yours. Next go back to the run cmd and type in
\\xx.xx.xx.xx\C$
The X's are your IP address. The C$ will give you access into the c drive of that machine. If you have a folder shared out on each computer then don't worry about the c$ just do \\ then the IP address. That will bring up the folder for the machine and show you all your shared folders.
Reply:first right click on my computer, and bring up system properities
click on the computer name tab.
make sure all 6 computers are in the same workgroup. This should make life easier
To map drives or access from the command line it will always use this convention \\server\share
you will always have an administrative share on the c drive. From the run command type \\workstation name (can be found where you set the workgroup)\c$
Let's just say there is 2 computers, one machine is named machine1, and the other is machine2
at the run command type \\machine1\C$.
this will give you access to the root of c:\
if you want a shared folder use that folder name instead of the c$
ex. let's just say i want to share my music folder one machine 1, and the directory strucuture is c:\music
at the run command from workstation 2 would be.
\\machine1\music. that will give you access to the machine1 music folder located at c:\music
hold that helps
you can always put that name structure into make network drives, and use any letter you want to map drives to all 6 workstations
