Wireless network internet connection problem!!! I need HELP!!!?

Okay, I bought a new Compaq/HP laptop with Vista Home Premium on Sunday and everything works fine except I can't connect to my wireless network. It's my cousins wireless network Iand it's an unsecure wireless network and even though my computer finds the network and picks it up it says connect to network. I click connect to network and it starts to connect and then stops and says Windows failed to connect and then says diagnose the problem and then says something like this:

"Windows can't connect to network ********** because it hasn't received a response from the wireless router or access point"

However if I plug the eternet cable into my laptop the internet works fine but I can't connect to it wireless. My cousin however can connect to the wireless network with no problem.

I can connect to a lot of other wireless networks however such as the school library and other unsecure networks though

Can someone please help me get my computer to connect wirelessly to the network.

Wireless network internet connection problem!!! I need HELP!!!?
I had the exact problem and only just got it fixed. After calling microsoft and going through a lot of .. well we'll skip that. They told me I had to update my router's firmware version.

I don't know if other routers have the same issue, but my guess is this is the problem. If you don't have a westell you have to contact your Internet Service provider to find out how to do this.

If you do have a westell, I can walk you through what I did.

Click on this link.

now open a new browser window (keep the other one open)

First of all, you have to find out what your current firmware version is.

If you have another computer on the same network, check the connection status. (right click your active connection and select Status) you need the Default Gateway number.

Once you find your Default Gateway number, type it into your internet browser.

this should give you the low down on your router.

I selected (Status) -%26gt;(About)

in this list of info should be your current firmware version

example:

VER:03.00.63a

your version number matches the one on the dell support page, you need to update.

ON THE DELL SUPPORT PAGE is a link, several lines below the pdf file, download a firmware update.

or you can just follow this link.

http://download.verizon.net/webdownload/...

run the program.

this should update your firmware version.

I know that was all slightly confusing.

so if you have more questions just drop me a line.

I'm going on a trip for the week and I'm not sure if I'll find a hotspot so I'll check tomorrow before I leave.

Hope this at least pointed you in the right direction!
